Prudential

Prudential Informative 3D messages Financial illustrations We worked with design agency Further Creative to produce this campaign for the financial services giants Prudential. They wanted an informative series of 3D illustrations to use on their website. An engaging message The work that we created would need to be based around keywords relating to Prudential’s services conveying their message to the audience. We didn’t want our image to be too generic and so started working on a way that we could incorporate the text in an interesting and engaging way. Integrated text We began this work by giving the Prudential font the 3D treatment to create bold, stylised text, which we could then integrate into stock images to bring the messages to life. As we didn’t just want flat text we chose to arrange the words as a sculpture, livening up the lettering by rotating and layering it. Photo realistic shading Once our text was positioned we needed to make sure it looked as though it belonged. We reverse engineered the lighting from the stock photos and applied it to the text, adding reflections and shadows to create the illusion that it is physically in the imagery. Scottish Government

Scottish Government High end 3D retouching What frozen things do in summer The Scottish Government needed some imagery to go with the launch of a new initiative. Their idea was to create an intriguing and eye catching visual by transforming a traditional snowman into a fun summery one. Challenge accepted This project posed some problems for us as all we had to work with was this stock photo of a winter snowman. CGI magic CGI is the perfect tool to create this kind of image. We are able to skilfully retouch any image, creating new elements that are consistent with an existing photo. Classic retouching Our first step in this process was to remove the winter clothing from the original image so we had a blank canvas for our new clothes. Perfectly tailored We used 3D modelling to create all the new elements on the image, mapping out every detail precisely. On the shirt we wanted an extremely high level of detail in order for our CGI to look realistic so we even created buttons, seams and creases. Naturally lit It was vital that the lighting of our digital clothing matched that of the original picture. We replicated the blue tinted, wintery lighting from the original and added it to our new elements so that the two were coherent. NCP

NCP

NCP Branded character design Marketing illustrations In 2011 we were contacted by NCP to help them with their new marketing idea; to introduce a character series that could be used in a variety of future campaigns. They were determined that the design of the characters was unique and something that could be instantly recognisable as being part of the NCP brand. Taking the brand 3D We developed a geometric 3D style that mirrored the “rounded squares” design of their famous logo, which we used when creating all the elements that would make up our images. It was important that the customers of NCP could relate to the characters and so we ensured that our designs were extremely open and friendly. Personalised caricatures To avoid a very generic feel in this campaign we decided to base some of the characters on actual people from within the business. We created detailed caricatures in the style we developed, incorporating the body language and personalities of the employees. This added a human touch to the project and meant that it was completely individual to NCP. Design process Detailed planning is a key part of all the work we do and this project was no exception. We played close attention to detail when drafting all of the images for NCP, which allowed us to solve any design problems on paper before beginning the work digitally. This process is vital when working on a tight time scale, saving us time and effort. Rendering style We tailored our characters to include the best parts of reality and cartoon, creating a perfect blend for a clean and professional style. Although the cartoon characters were simplified, we used realistic lighting to create subtle shadows and...
Zurich Municipal

Zurich Municipal

Zurich Municipal Sophisticated financial services illustration Beautiful corporate illustations Bigman was involved in helping Zurich Municipal create some illustrations for a risk management brochure they were producing. They had previously featured a singular image of a prism showing light refraction and wanted to develop this into a full series that could be used throughout the publication. Darkside of the moon Physics lessons at school taught us that prisms can be used to split white light in to a pretty spectrum of light ranging from red through to orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. Our challenge came when we needed to combine this knowledge with our digital expertise in order for us to recreate the natural behavior of light digitally. CGI science To accurately simulate the physical properties of light we needed to do more than just paint the rays digitally. We found a technical, scientific solution which helped us to perfectly create this variety of images. Nuance

Nuance

Nuance Corporate brand animation CGI brand refresh The Nuance Group is one of the world’s leading travel retailers, and in 2013 they brought together Bigman and Designhouse to help with their brand refresh. We needed to completely reimagine their brand identity and create graphics that would be in keeping with the new phase of the company. An animated journey For this project we needed to create a 3D ribbon that could be used to form a new logo and incorporated into motion graphics for the launch of the new branding. The concept behind this was that the ribbon would be on a journey, much like the customers who shop at the Nuance duty free stores. No more tangles Our ribbon needed to be animated in a way that looked as though it was moving freely but we found that left to its own devices it quickly became tangled. To avoid this we created a detailed plan of the path the ribbon would take so that it was able to flow easily through each transition. Controlled CGI In order to create a dynamic ribbon we had to embark on some research and development. We needed to find a way to pose the ribbon and then have it automatically animate between poses without getting knotted, which was easier said than done! Our solution to this problem came through some very complicated maths, which meant that we were able to twist any points of the ribbon we liked but the computer would deal with the complex transitions. 3D logo A key part of this project was the new Nuance logo and it proved to be quite tricky as we needed to create an eye catching 3D logo that was strong enough to still work...
