Mechanical Keyboard

Mechanical Keyboard Photo realistic product visualisation Testing, testing We regularly receive cutting edge new software from developers, such as Pixar, and before we update our system to incorporate them we like to do little trial runs of example projects. Using the software just as we would when producing actual work allows us to test it for any bugs and glitches, which can then be ironed out before client work begins. Is it real? Believe it or not this keyboard isn’t real! Using our expertise we have generated it entirely through the power of 3D rendering. These examples of photo realism really showcase the level of detail that we can add to our 3D designs. A virtual photography studio Using CGI we can completely replicate the work of a photography studio. We can quickly customise backgrounds with lighting designed to add maximum customer appeal to products but because CGI allows far more control we have none of the problematic issues that come with photography like unwanted smudges, reflections and shadows. 3D product visualisation Another great advantage of CGI is the ability to rapidly prototype products that haven’t even been produced yet. Previsualising products means that you are able to experiment with design elements such as colour schemes, shapes and materials in a cost effective way before your products are mass produced. Flex

Flex

Flexicover Loveable digital mascot Brighton based buddies Designate, a fellow Brighton based agency, needed our help to reinvent the brand identity of travel insurance company Flexicover with a fun 3D mascot. Flexible friend We began this project brainstorming concepts for a fun and interesting travel insurance campaign. After going through a few ideas it was decided that our proposed mascot, Flex, would be based on the idea that he ‘has you covered’. Literal thinking To visually create our idea we thought it would be great if we took it quite literally with our mascot stretched around a range of travel related objects. Less is more As travel insurance is such a serious topic we needed to be sure to create a balance when designing our character, although he needed to be fun he would also need to portray an important message. To achieve this balance we chose to give Flex an iconic, simplistic design keeping him free of any elements that might distract from the overall campaign. It’s all in the eyes Expression is important for any character but as this mascot’s only details were in his face, we needed to get it just right and so we drafted countless different combinations of eyes and mouths. We found that even the smallest changes to the features completely altered the appearance and personality of our character. We tweaked the shapes of the eyes and mouths, adding teeth and eye colour until we had the perfect combination for our open and friendly mascot. Pollock

Pollock

Bigman R&D – Pollock Artistic rendering software A consistent style CGI is an incredible tool that we use everyday to produce very high detailed, graphic imagery. However the classic style of CGI is very accurate and rigid. This means images can often be expressionless and almost cold. Express yourself As diverse artists we wanted the freedom to be as creative as possible with CGI. We thought it would be great if we could incorporate traditional styles into our work to give our images more depth and soul. Why not do it in Photoshop? The art filters already available to us, in programs such as Photoshop, are extremely restrictive and create very flat images as they know nothing about their subject matter, working almost blind. Meet Pollock We were so passionate about this idea we focused some time on R&D in order to develop our own artistic rendering program; Pollock. Pollock can covert basic CGI into a range of artistic styles, from traditional pencil or painterly ones to very abstract ones. Human perception As humans we perceive the world with our 5 senses and so we can instinctively depict 3D objects. We needed to replicate these senses in our program so that it would be able to create natural looking work. Intelligent technology Pollock is extremely intuitive and can see information about 3D images in very high detail. This information then allows Pollock to create artwork just like a real artist, because it knows the boundaries and depth of the object it is able orientate strokes to flow across the surface area and create dimension through the use of shading. Pixar Render Farm

Pixar Render Farm

Pixar – Render Farm Fun Minecraft style illustration Growing relationships This project was another collaboration with our friends at Pixar for their Renderman University. We created this light hearted imagery to balance out a very technical tutorial about render farms. Render farming Render farms, just like the hulking monstrosity we have here at Bigman, are essentially a collection of computers that boost processing power and speed up the rendering process; a must have for CGI. Our illustration is a little render farm joke for those CGI geeks out there, creating a literal render farm with cubes reminiscent of retro style computer graphics. Cultivating images We generated the 3D wheel barrow and pixels digitally and were then able to retouch an existing photograph to integrate the digital elements into the background. Ernst and Young

Ernst and Young

Ernst and Young Dynamic corporate illustrations 3D presentation material The branding and communications studio Home Associates contacted us to help them by creating some illustrations needed by Ernst and Young for an urgent presentation. A time sensitive project We had a very tight deadline on this project as we only had 24 hours to produce an image combining 3D text in a real world scene. In order to meet the deadline and avoid any loss of time we split the responsibilities across our team, which meant that the work could be done quickly but still to a high standard as each element of the illustration would get the attention it deserved. Weather simulation Once our sculptural 3D text was positioned in our photograph we needed to match it to the surroundings. Not only did we have the challenge of accurately simulating the light but we also had to incorporate the weather into this image. To realistically recreate the rain we did some careful retouching of the image, painstakingly painting in the reflection and each droplet of bouncing rain.
