NSS Faith Schools

National Secular Society Faith Schools Highlighting the issues Having already made the National Secular Society’s 150th anniversary video in 2017, the organisation approached this year to make an animation about faith schools. The purpose was to highlight the issues of faiths schools and how they impact their communities. The National Secular Society want to make clear the amount of discrimination inherent in the faith schools system. Getting personal The topic of faith schools is a very human story about an issue that people feel very passionate about. With this being the case, rather than using computer software such as photoshop or illustrator to create the assets, we approached this in a more human way. We hand drew the characters, buildings, school signs and all the other assets needed for the animation. This method allowed us to create charming imperfections in the art work that computers would lack. The result Everyone involved was really pleased with the result, a dynamic and educational video that explains the issues that are ingrained within the faith school system with a warm, hand drawn aesthetic that complements the important story being told. Skillsoft Sales explainer video Visual communication Skillsoft needed our help to create a promotional motion graphic that would help explain to potential customers what they were able to offer in order to improve learning and development programs. Explain yourself This video is an excellent example of just one of the styles we are able to use to bring informative content to life and create effective explainer videos. These videos are a great tool for visual learning, the clean and simple style has no unnecessary or distracting details which allows for a clear communication of the overall message. Blackberry Music event animation Striking motion graphics In 2012 Capital FM’s star packed winter concert, the Jingle Bell Ball, was sponsored by Blackberry. They needed us to create some eye catching, promotional animations that could be played on big screens during the sold out concert at London’s O2 Arena. A young audience As the concert is family friendly, a huge portion of the audience are young teenagers and so it was important that our visuals were targeted at this market. Including all the important elements of the Capital FM and Blackberry brands we made sure our animations were appealing with a flashy, blingy style. Nuance

Nuance

Nuance Corporate brand animation CGI brand refresh The Nuance Group is one of the world’s leading travel retailers, and in 2013 they brought together Bigman and Designhouse to help with their brand refresh. We needed to completely reimagine their brand identity and create graphics that would be in keeping with the new phase of the company. An animated journey For this project we needed to create a 3D ribbon that could be used to form a new logo and incorporated into motion graphics for the launch of the new branding. The concept behind this was that the ribbon would be on a journey, much like the customers who shop at the Nuance duty free stores. No more tangles Our ribbon needed to be animated in a way that looked as though it was moving freely but we found that left to its own devices it quickly became tangled. To avoid this we created a detailed plan of the path the ribbon would take so that it was able to flow easily through each transition. Controlled CGI In order to create a dynamic ribbon we had to embark on some research and development. We needed to find a way to pose the ribbon and then have it automatically animate between poses without getting knotted, which was easier said than done! Our solution to this problem came through some very complicated maths, which meant that we were able to twist any points of the ribbon we liked but the computer would deal with the complex transitions. 3D logo A key part of this project was the new Nuance logo and it proved to be quite tricky as we needed to create an eye catching 3D logo that was strong enough to still work...
Mazda

Mazda Illustrative CGI advertisement Creative collaboration At Bigman we pride ourselves on our imaginative and unique animation styles and our stylised, experimental Mazda animation, made in collaboration with celebrated illustrator Natalie Cowx, showcases this perfectly. Quirky animation style We wanted to create a promotional video where a photorealistic car was the center piece in an enchanting cartoon dreamland. The fusing of crisp CGI and Cowx’s whimsical illustration style needed to look natural, as though they belonged together, and so we ensured that the colour and charm of the illustrations was reflected in the car as it moved. Bespoke 3D rendering It was important that we retained the graphic look and charm of the 2D illustrations when converting them into 3D. As there is no off the shelf solution to automatically render in this style we had to create each feature separately, using a number of different programs and approaches, which we then combined in order to achieve the exact 3D look we wanted. Technical animation The scene contained hundreds of individual elements and when it came to animating the trees there was simply too many to animate by hand. To combat this issue we developed an algorithm that would automatically animate the movement of the 3D trees depending on their distance from the car.
