Talk to a Doctor 3D brand mascot animation Animated explainer video Stadn, a global online medical service based in London, needed our help to find a way to explain their Talk to a Doctor service in a fast and concise way. They knew they wanted a 3D animation but were unsure on a direction to take it, so it was our job to come up with an engaging way to guide the audience through each aspect of their product. Developing the idea The service is an online medical consultancy aimed at English speakers both at home and abroad who need urgent medical advice or may be unfamiliar with a foreign health system. We decided that the best way to explain the service was to recreate it with 3D characters that showed real life examples of how Talk to a Doctor can be used. Heroes and villains Developing the characters was a key part of this project and we worked closely with Stadn to perfect them. We created the persona of ‘Clive’, he represents the target audience and is the centre of our story. We also designed the doctor character,  who embodies the values of the Talk to a Doctor service, and a contrasting ‘bad’ doctor with questionable morals. 3D character design We quickly got started producing a number of appealing design ideas for each character. Minimalism was our main concern in the initial designs, as we wanted to present Talk to a Doctor as a modern, simple and easy to use service without any visual distractions. We developed our designs into a set of matching characters that incorporate the brand colour scheme. Story telling It...

IRIS Explainer

IRIS Explainer Video Mixed media animated explainer A taxing issue IRIS, one of the UK’s leading providers for business accountancy software, came to us with a brief to create an explainer video that incorporated both live action and 2D animation. The video would need to clearly explain how to use their accountancy software in an engaging way. Planning the shoot It was more important than ever that we produced a highly detailed storyboard for this project, as not only would we be creating animated scenes but we would also be undertaking a live action shoot. This meant that not only did we need to know exactly what we would be producing digitally but also details about each shot we would be filming. Visually engaging One of our biggest problems in the planning process was how we would actually be able to visually explain each concept of the IRIS software. We found that metaphors, for example a tape measure representing a tailored service, really helped to make the concepts more understandable to the viewer. Animation meets live action We believe that animation and live action compliment each other perfectly. Our expertise in lighting came in extremely handy when it came to shooting the footage as it was crucial that the lighting on the day was exactly right, especially whilst filming IRIS’ product director, Steve Cox. Branded results The finished video professionally showcases the IRIS brand, using actual footage of the company enhanced by our 2D animation. We also incorporated the brand’s colours, which resulted in a clear,  bespoke and engaging explainer video. Explain yourself This video is an excellent example of just one of the styles we are able to use to bring informative content to life and create effective explainer videos. These videos are a great tool for visual learning, the clean and simple style has no unnecessary or distracting details which allows for a clear communication of the overall message. Systagenix Stylised training and marketing videos Expert medical videos Systagenix contacted us with an exciting brief to help them develop a series of animations that would showcase their innovative medical products. 19 videos were needed in total, half would demonstrate the real world application of each product whilst the other half would take it to a microscopic level and show the science behind the products. A sensitive style As we would be animating some very unpleasant wounds, it was important that our work wasn’t too gruesome. We developed a unique 3D style for Systagenix; a very graphic, cartoon style with a crisp and clean look that was in keeping with the brand values. CGI fabric challenge A huge challenge for us during this project was to accurately create the cloth that made up the plasters and bandages used in the videos. The fabric was extremely complex as each required different amounts of tension and involved a number of different layers. Realistic cloth simulation For the scenes where bandages are wrapped around the leg it was important that as the fabric was layered it naturally formed around the leg, like a real bandage would, but we also needed to create tension with the hand pulling from the other side. In order to create the precise look that we wanted it was essential that we used a cloth simulator, which applies scientific information to CGI fabric instructing it to behave realistically. A prestigious accolade This project was featured in the CGI issue of the Creative Review magazine (June 2012 issue). Bacardi Magical product animation Bar advertisements We were contacted by Mind Orchard to help them with a project for Bacardi. They needed us to produce 9 animated adverts for Bacardi cocktails that could be shown on large HD screens in their bars to encourage sales. Fantasia The concept for our work was to bring to life all the ingredients of each cocktail. We wanted to pay homage to the 1940 Disney animation classic Fantasia from which we took inspiration for how we could accurately simulate human movements in the inanimate objects and how we would make them interact with each other. Visual planning The creative process for this project was open and collaborative, and because of this the progression of our work was extremely smooth. We created rough animations for each cocktail advert, which meant that everyone could previsualise what the final videos would actually look like and allowed the team at Bacardi to amend or add any elements they desired. Natural challenges Realistic looking glass and liquids are very hard to create and light using CGI, we needed to use advanced techniques to bring these complex elements to life. The key to portraying appealing looking fruity cocktails was in the details such the translucency and the tiny condensation droplets on the glasses.
